{"id":322,"date":"2020-08-12T00:14:34","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T00:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ngondro-practices.org\/?page_id=322"},"modified":"2020-08-12T00:19:09","modified_gmt":"2020-08-12T00:19:09","slug":"dzogchen-and-mahamudra","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ngondro-practices.org\/index.php\/dzogchen-and-mahamudra\/","title":{"rendered":"Dzogchen and Mahamudra"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What are the main differences between <em>dzogchen<\/em> and <em>mahamudra<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are differences in the <em>lineage of transmission<\/em> and in the <em>skillful methods<\/em> (Skt. <em>upaya<\/em>) of these two meditations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if we are speaking of exactly what they are, there is no difference: <em>both are practices leading to <strong>recognizing mind as it is<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>lineage of dzogchen<\/em>, which in Sanskrit is <em>mahasandhi<\/em> and means \u201cthe great completion\u201d or \u201cthe great perfection,\u201d began with the teacher Garab Dorje, who passed it to Shri Singha, who passed it down from teacher to student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>lineage of mahamudra<\/em>, which in Sanskrit means \u201cthe great symbol,\u201d or the \u201cthe great seal,\u201d began with Saraha, who passed it to Nagarjuna, who passed it down to Shawari, and so forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lineage of dzogchen that came to Tibet was mostly associated with the <em>Nyingma lineage<\/em>, while the lineage of mahamudra was mostly associated with the <em>Kagyu lineage<\/em>, with Marpa, Milarepa, Gampopa, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Both dzogchen and mahamudra are <u>methods for meditating on the mind<\/u>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Kagyu lineage supplication we say \u201call thoughts are dharmakaya.\u201d <em>The guru can point out the nature of mind to us<\/em>; in the <em>mahamudra tradition, we then meditate in terms of that<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the tradition of dzogchen, we make a distinction between <em><u>mind<\/u><\/em> (Tib. <em>sem<\/em>) and <em><u>awareness<\/u><\/em> (Tib. <em>rigpa<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rigpa has the connotation of <em><u>knowing<\/u><\/em> and <em><u>recognizing<\/u><\/em>, of <em>having understood true nature<\/em>; sem has the connotation of <em>not having recognized the true nature<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the technique or method of dzogchen is to separate sem from rigpa and, knowing that sem is not the true nature of mind, to come to rigpa, the knowing or fundamental mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>An Aspirational Prayer for <u>Mahamudra<\/u><\/em> composed by the Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje, there is a verse that says: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t exist, even the victorious ones haven\u2019t seen it. It is not non-existent because it is the basis of all samsara and nirvana. This is not a contradiction because this is the unity of the middle way. May we realize the true nature of mind, which is free from all limitations and extremes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, in <em>An Aspirational Prayer for <u>Dzogchen<\/u><\/em> by Jigme Lingpa, there is a verse that says: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t exist, even the victorious ones haven\u2019t seen it. It is not nonexistent because it is the basis of all samsara and nirvana. This is not a contradiction because this is the unity of the middle way.
